Palermo

West and north-coast logistics hub next to the city and airport transfers. Useful for crews who want Sicilian staging before committing to Aeolian hops.

Milazzo

Strait-side harbour that stages Aeolian approaches well. Good when your operator and transfers sit closer to Messina than Portorosa.

Portorosa (Aeolian)

Primary charter marina for classic Aeolian Island weeks. Short hops toward Vulcano, Lipari and the wider archipelago with strong bareboat and catamaran volume.

Which base for which week

Choose Portorosa if Aeolian island hopping is the point of the week. Choose Milazzo when your boat and transfers stage from the Strait. Choose Palermo for west/north logistics or when your operator bases there.

Provisioning, fuel and check-in

Fuel, water and supermarket runs are easiest at the main bases. Aeolian town quays fill early in July and August. Nearest airports: Palermo (PMO) for west starts; Catania (CTA) or Reggio/Messina transfers for Portorosa and Milazzo weeks.

This page is research intent: where fleets start and which harbour fits the week. When you are ready to compare boats and weekly rates, use the Sicily yacht charter page or browse yachts.

FAQs

Which Sicily marina should I depart from?

Portorosa holds much of the Aeolian bareboat volume. Milazzo suits Strait-side staging. Palermo works for west/north logistics when your operator bases there.

Do I need to book marina berths in advance?

In July and August, yes for popular Aeolian harbours and for Saturday changeovers. Shoulder season is more flexible, especially mid-week.

Is Portorosa good for first-timers?

Often yes: hops are short and scenic once you leave the marina. Still expect busy Saturdays and book popular island quays early in peak season.

Can I start in Sicily and finish in Sardinia?

One-way weeks are possible but rarer and usually dearer. Confirm the operator allows the drop-off before you plan the route.

How windy are the Aeolian Islands?

Conditions can pipe up on exposed legs. Plan reefing, early arrivals and a conservative Plan B harbour.
