Yacht Charter French Polynesia FAQs
For bareboat charters in French Polynesia, you’ll need a recognised sailing qualification such as RYA Day Skipper, ASA 104, or ICC (International Certificate of Competence). You should also demonstrate recent sailing experience—most charter companies require at least 2-3 weeks of bareboat experience within the last 3 years. Navigation in French Polynesian waters requires careful piloting due to coral reefs, passes through barrier reefs, and varying currents. However, most charters focus on the Society Islands which offer relatively protected sailing with visible landmarks. Given the remote location, high costs, and value of local knowledge, many charterers opt for skippered or crewed charters.
The best sailing season in French Polynesia is May to October (dry season/winter) with consistent southeast trade winds, lower humidity, minimal rainfall, and comfortable temperatures (24-28°C). June-August is peak season with the most reliable weather but highest prices and most boats. Shoulder months (May, September-October) offer excellent conditions with better availability and lower prices. November-April is the wet season (summer) with higher temperatures (27-32°C), more rain (though usually brief showers), higher humidity, and potential for cyclones (rare but possible December-March). The water temperature remains warm (26-29°C) year-round, perfect for swimming and snorkelling.
French Polynesia is one of the world’s most expensive charter destinations. A basic 38-40ft monohull bareboat (rare) starts from around USD $5,500/week in wet season up to USD $11,000/week in July-August. Catamarans dominate the fleet, starting from USD $9,500/week low season and reaching USD $19,500+/week peak season. Crewed charters start from USD $19,000/week. Budget significantly for extras: fuel (USD $800-1,500), provisioning (extremely expensive—USD $200-350/person minimum), mooring fees (USD $30-70/night), and dive equipment. Overall costs including extras can easily double the base charter price.
Standard yacht charters typically include: the yacht itself, standard equipment and safety gear, bed linen and towels, final cleaning. Not included are: fuel, provisioning (extremely expensive in French Polynesia—consider provisioning heavily in Tahiti), mooring fees, marina fees, dive equipment rental, fishing licences, skipper/crew (unless booked), and end-of-charter cleaning if excessively dirty. Most anchorages require paid moorings or marina berths due to coral protection. Always check your charter contract for specific inclusions as French Polynesia charters can vary.
For a one-week charter, focus on either the Leeward Islands (Raiatea/Tahaa, Bora Bora, Huahine) OR Tahiti/Moorea area—don’t try to do both as passages are long. Most popular: Start Raiatea, sail the shared Raiatea/Tahaa lagoon (vanilla farms, pearl farms), visit Bora Bora (2-3 nights exploring the stunning lagoon), then Huahine, returning to Raiatea. This provides excellent variety without excessive passages. Alternative: Base in Tahiti, spend time in Moorea’s dramatic bays. Two weeks allows combining both areas or venturing to the Tuamotus (for experienced sailors). Your charter company can recommend itineraries based on your experience and priorities.
Provisioning in French Polynesia is extremely expensive—typically 2-3 times Mediterranean prices. Imported goods dominate and arrive by ship or air. Budget USD $200-350+ per person per week for basic provisioning. Tips: Provision heavily in Papeete’s large supermarkets (Carrefour, Champion) before departure—selection is best and prices lowest. Local produce (fish, tropical fruits, bread) is more affordable and excellent. Many islands have small shops but with limited selection and very high prices. Wine and cheese (French influence) are available but expensive. Dining at island restaurants is also very expensive (USD $30-60+ per person). Pack favourite snacks and speciality items from home.
