Yacht Charter Philippines FAQs
For bareboat charters in the Philippines, you’ll need a recognised sailing qualification such as RYA Day Skipper, ASA 104, or ICC (International Certificate of Competence). You should also demonstrate recent sailing experience—most charter companies require at least 2 weeks of bareboat experience within the last 3 years. Philippine waters vary from protected bays perfect for intermediate sailors to open passages requiring more experience. Navigation requires careful piloting due to coral reefs, numerous islands, and variable charts. Given the remote locations, limited communication in many areas, and value of local knowledge about weather and safe anchorages, most charterers opt for skippered charters.
The best sailing season varies by region. For Palawan (El Nido, Coron)—the most popular area—November to May offers the best weather with the northeast monsoon bringing calm seas, minimal rain, and comfortable temperatures (26-32°C). December-April is peak season with the most reliable conditions. June-October is the southwest monsoon (wet season) with more rain, rougher seas, and potential typhoons, but significantly lower prices and fewer tourists. The Visayas has a slightly different pattern. Typhoon season is June-November with highest risk August-October. Most charter operations focus on the November-May dry season.
The Philippines offers excellent value for tropical sailing. A basic 38-40ft monohull bareboat starts from around USD $2,800/week in monsoon season up to USD $6,500/week during Christmas-New Year. Catamarans cost 60-80% more. Skippered charters add USD $150-200/day, whilst fully crewed luxury charters start from USD $9,500/week. Budget for extras: fuel (USD $250-450), provisioning (very affordable—USD $50-80/person), island hopping fees (small charges at some protected areas), and dive equipment rental. Overall costs are significantly lower than Caribbean or Mediterranean, making the Philippines exceptional value for spectacular cruising grounds.
Standard yacht charters typically include: the yacht itself, standard equipment and safety gear, bed linen and towels, final cleaning, and dinghy with outboard motor. Not included are: fuel, provisioning, island fees and permits (some protected areas charge small fees), marina fees (if used), skipper/crew (unless booked), dive equipment, and fishing gear. Most Philippine anchorages are free, helping keep costs manageable. Provisioning is affordable with excellent local markets and fresh seafood. Always check your charter contract for specific inclusions.
The Philippines offers spectacular but developing sailing infrastructure. Key points: Charts and navigation aids can be less comprehensive than Mediterranean or Caribbean—GPS and careful piloting essential. Many areas are remote with limited facilities—provision well in major towns. Mobile coverage is patchy in remote areas. Weather can change rapidly—monitor forecasts and avoid typhoon season (August-October highest risk). Some areas have strong currents. However, Filipino people are exceptionally friendly and helpful. English is widely spoken. Provisioning is affordable with excellent fresh produce and seafood. The rewards—pristine beauty, incredible diversity, and outstanding value—make the Philippines one of Asia’s best sailing destinations.
The most popular route is the Bacuit Archipelago around El Nido: explore Big Lagoon, Small Lagoon, Secret Lagoon, Snake Island, and numerous pristine beaches—all within easy sailing distance. A longer itinerary explores north from El Nido through Linapacan Islands (clearest waters) to Coron (wreck diving). The Visayas offers different character: island-hop between Cebu, Bohol (Chocolate Hills), Panglao, Apo Island (marine sanctuary), and Boracay. One week is enough for El Nido area, whilst two weeks allows exploring Coron or the Visayas. Your charter company can recommend routes based on your experience, interests (diving, beaches, culture), and prevailing weather.
