Yacht Charter Malta FAQs
For bareboat charters in Malta, you’ll need a recognised sailing qualification such as RYA Day Skipper, ASA 104, or ICC (International Certificate of Competence). You should also demonstrate recent sailing experience—most charter companies require at least 2 weeks of bareboat experience within the last 3 years. Maltese waters are generally safe and well-charted, but can experience strong winds, particularly the Gregale (northeasterly) in winter. The compact cruising area makes Malta ideal for less experienced charterers. If you’re new to Mediterranean sailing or want local insights into the best anchorages and historical sites, a skippered charter ensures stress-free sailing.
The sailing season in Malta runs from April to October. The best time is May-June and September-October when you’ll find pleasant temperatures (22-28°C), reliable winds, fewer tourists, and comfortable conditions. July-August is peak season with hot weather (30-35°C), strong summer winds, and busier anchorages but guaranteed sunshine. Malta’s year-round mild climate means sailing is possible even in winter (November-March), though weather is more variable with stronger winds and occasional storms. Spring and autumn offer the best combination of good weather, manageable winds, and value for money.
Malta offers excellent Mediterranean value. A basic 38-40ft monohull bareboat starts from around €2,200/week in low season up to €4,000/week in July-August. Catamarans typically cost 60-80% more. Skippered charters add €130-170/day, whilst fully crewed luxury charters start from €7,500/week. Budget for extras: fuel (€200-350), provisioning (€60-100/person—Malta has excellent supermarkets), marina fees (€35-60/night), and mooring fees where applicable (€20-40/night). Many anchorages around Comino and Gozo are free. Malta’s compact size means lower fuel costs than larger Mediterranean destinations.
Standard yacht charters typically include: the yacht itself, standard equipment and safety gear, bed linen and towels, final cleaning, and dinghy with outboard motor. Not included are: fuel, food and beverages, marina and mooring fees, skipper/crew (unless booked), and optional extras like fishing equipment or paddleboards. Malta offers a good mix of free anchorages (particularly around Comino and Gozo) and paid marina facilities in Valletta and other harbours. Always check your charter contract for specific inclusions.
Yes, Sicily is approximately 50-60 nautical miles north of Malta, making it feasible for experienced sailors with appropriate weather conditions. However, this passage crosses the Malta-Sicily Channel which can experience challenging conditions including strong winds and shipping traffic. Most charter companies either prohibit Sicily passages or require advanced sailing qualifications and charge additional fees for international sailing. The passage requires careful weather planning and typically takes 8-12 hours. For most week-long charters, exploring Malta, Gozo, and Comino thoroughly provides plenty of variety without the complexities and time commitment of an international passage.
The Blue Lagoon on Comino’s northwest coast is Malta’s most famous anchorage with stunning turquoise waters and white sandy bottom. However, it’s extremely popular—expect dozens of boats in high season, especially on weekends. Arrive early morning (before 10am) to secure a good spot. The lagoon is shallow with good holding, but can be crowded and uncomfortable in strong winds. Alternative anchorages on Comino’s south side (Santa Maria Bay) or Gozo’s nearby bays offer more space and shelter. The Blue Lagoon is spectacular but consider visiting midweek or exploring quieter alternatives. Your charter company can suggest less crowded spots with equally beautiful swimming.
