Yacht Charter Portugal FAQs
For bareboat charters in Portugal, you will usually need a recognised coastal sailing qualification such as an ICC (International Certificate of Competence) or RYA Day Skipper, plus recent skippering experience on a similar-sized yacht. Exact requirements vary by charter company, so share your sailing CV and we will match you with a suitable operator.
The main sailing season in Portugal runs from May to October. The Algarve offers warm, settled conditions and mainly moderate winds through summer, while the Lisbon and west coasts can be breezier, especially when the nortada (northerly trade) sets in. Shoulder months such as May, June and September often give a great balance of good weather, fewer crowds and better prices.
Weekly bareboat prices for a 37–40 ft monohull in Portugal typically start from around €2,300 in low season, rising to €4,800 or more in peak summer. Catamarans are usually 40–80% more, and fully crewed yachts start higher again. Remember to budget for extras such as fuel, mooring fees, cleaning, skipper or hostess, and any optional toys like paddleboards.
A standard yacht charter normally includes the yacht, basic safety equipment, charts and pilot books, galley equipment, bed linen and final cleaning. Not included are fuel, food and drink, mooring fees away from the home marina, skipper/crew (unless booked), and optional extras such as early check-in, Wi-Fi or water toys. Your quote will set out exactly what is and is not included.
It is possible to plan one-way or longer passages between the Algarve and Lisbon, but distances are significant and the Atlantic coast can be exposed. Most holiday crews prefer to focus either on the Algarve (short, relaxed hops and sheltered anchorages) or on Cascais/Lisbon and the nearby coast. If you are considering a one-way charter, talk to us and we will advise on feasibility, experience required and any re-delivery fees.
We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance that specifically covers sailing and yacht charter activities, including trip cancellation and medical cover. Your yacht will be insured by the charter company, but you will normally be responsible for a security deposit, which can be reduced with an optional damage waiver. Always read policy wording carefully to ensure offshore sailing and dinghy use are included.
