Yacht Charter Croatia FAQs
For bareboat yacht charters in Croatia, you’ll need a recognised sailing qualification such as RYA Day Skipper, ASA 104, or ICC (International Certificate of Competence). Croatian authorities also require a VHF radio operator’s licence. Most charter companies require evidence of at least 2 weeks of recent bareboat experience within the last 3 years, plus a logbook or reference from previous charter companies. If you don’t meet these requirements, a skippered charter is an excellent alternative where a professional Croatian captain can show you the best anchorages.
The Croatian sailing season runs from April to October. The best time is May-June and September when you’ll find pleasant temperatures (22-28°C), reliable winds, fewer crowds, and better prices. July and August are peak season with guaranteed sunshine, warm water (24-26°C), but busier marinas and highest prices. The Adriatic can experience strong northerly ‘Bura’ winds in spring and autumn, so weather planning is important. April and October offer excellent value for experienced sailors who don’t mind slightly cooler temperatures and more variable weather.
Yacht charter prices in Croatia vary considerably by season. A basic 38-40ft monohull bareboat starts from around €2,200/week in low season up to €4,500/week in July-August. Catamarans typically cost 60-80% more. Skippered charters add €120-150/day, whilst fully crewed luxury charters start from €7,500/week. Remember to budget for extras: fuel (€200-400), provisioning (€60-100/person), marina fees (€40-80/night), Croatian tourist tax (€1.40/person/day), national park fees (€15-25 if visiting Kornati or Mljet), and transit log (€50-70).
Standard yacht charters typically include: the yacht itself, standard equipment and safety gear, bed linen and towels, final cleaning, and dinghy with outboard motor. Not included are: fuel, food and beverages, marina and mooring fees, Croatian tourist tax, national park entrance fees, transit log (navigation permit), skipper/crew (unless booked), and optional extras like fishing equipment or paddleboards. Always check your charter contract for specific inclusions.
Yes, if you’re sailing in Kornati National Park or Mljet National Park, you’ll need to purchase entry permits. Kornati permits cost around €15-25 per person depending on season and duration. Mljet National Park has similar fees. These permits help fund conservation efforts and are usually purchased at the park entrance or from park rangers who visit your anchorage. Additionally, all vessels sailing in Croatian waters need a transit log (Plovidbeni Nalog), which your charter company will typically arrange for around €50-70.
The Bura (also spelled Bora) is a strong, cold northerly wind that can occur along the Croatian coast, particularly in spring and autumn. It can reach speeds of 40-60 knots in extreme cases, though typically it’s 20-35 knots. The Bura develops quickly and funnels through gaps in the coastal mountains, creating localised areas of very strong winds. Modern weather forecasting provides good advance warning, and experienced sailors can wait out the Bura in protected harbours. Summer sailing (June-September) experiences Bura less frequently. Your charter briefing will cover Bura awareness, and local weather forecasts specifically mention Bura predictions.
