Yacht Charter Thailand FAQs
For bareboat charters in Thailand, you’ll need a recognised sailing qualification such as RYA Day Skipper, ASA 104, or ICC (International Certificate of Competence). You should also demonstrate recent sailing experience—most charter companies require at least 2 weeks of bareboat experience within the last 3 years. Thai waters are generally well-protected with numerous islands, but navigation requires attention due to coral reefs, fishing boats, and tourist traffic. For first-time visitors to Asian waters or those wanting local expertise on the best anchorages and dive sites, a skippered charter is highly recommended and provides excellent value.
The best sailing season in Thailand is November to April (dry season) when you’ll find comfortable temperatures (26-32°C), calm seas, reliable northeast monsoon winds, and minimal rainfall. December-February is peak season with the best weather but higher prices. November and March-April offer excellent conditions with lower prices. May-October is the southwest monsoon season (wet season) with afternoon rain, rougher seas, and significantly lower prices—some marinas close, but Koh Samui’s east coast has opposite seasons and sails well June-September. Each region has slightly different optimal periods.
Thailand offers excellent value for tropical sailing. A basic 38-40ft monohull bareboat starts from around USD $2,200/week in low season up to USD $4,500/week during Christmas-New Year. Catamarans typically cost 60-80% more. Skippered charters add USD $140-180/day, whilst fully crewed luxury charters start from USD $7,500/week. Budget for extras: fuel (USD $200-400), provisioning (USD $60-100/person, food is very affordable in Thailand), marina fees (USD $25-50/night), national park fees (USD $15-30), and mooring buoys in popular areas (USD $15-30/night). Overall costs are lower than Mediterranean or Caribbean.
Standard yacht charters typically include: the yacht itself, standard equipment and safety gear, bed linen and towels, final cleaning, and dinghy with outboard motor. Not included are: fuel, food and beverages, marina and mooring fees, national park entrance fees (Similan Islands, Ang Thong, etc.), skipper/crew (unless booked), and optional extras like dive equipment or fishing gear. Many Thai anchorages are free, though popular spots have mooring buoys. Always check your charter contract for specific inclusions.
Yes, sailing in Thailand’s established charter areas (Phuket, Krabi, Koh Samui) is very safe. These regions have well-developed tourism infrastructure, reliable weather forecasting, and good marine facilities. Thai people are welcoming and helpful. However, you should be aware of several factors: abundant coral reefs require careful navigation (use charts and depth sounder), fishing boats and longtail tourist boats operate in many areas (good lookout essential), and pirates are not a concern in charter areas. Monsoon seasons bring rougher weather—always monitor forecasts. Medical facilities in tourist areas are excellent. Follow your charter company’s guidance and standard maritime safety practices.
Absolutely! Thailand is one of Asia’s premier diving destinations, and combining sailing with diving is extremely popular. The Similan Islands offer world-class diving with manta rays and whale sharks. Phi Phi Islands, Koh Tao, and numerous other sites provide excellent diving for all levels. Most charter companies can arrange dive equipment rental or recommend local dive operators. Many charterers combine several days of sailing with diving stops at the best sites. A skippered charter is ideal for diving-focused trips—your captain can navigate to the best dive sites whilst you enjoy the underwater world. Remember to follow safe diving practices, especially regarding flying or altitude after diving.
