Yacht Charter Mexico FAQs
For bareboat charters in Mexico, you’ll need a recognised sailing qualification such as RYA Day Skipper, ASA 104, or ICC (International Certificate of Competence). You should also demonstrate recent sailing experience—most charter companies require at least 2 weeks of bareboat experience within the last 3 years. Mexican waters vary significantly: the Caribbean offers easier sailing, whilst the Pacific coast and Sea of Cortez can have stronger winds and more challenging conditions. If you’re new to Mexican waters or want local expertise on wildlife viewing and best anchorages, a skippered charter is highly recommended.
The best sailing season varies by region. For the Riviera Maya (Caribbean), November-April offers the best weather with minimal rain, though sailing is possible year-round. For the Pacific coast and Sea of Cortez, November-May provides comfortable temperatures (24-30°C) and reliable winds, with whale watching excellent January-March. Summer (June-October) is hurricane season for both coasts, though storms are less common in the Sea of Cortez. December-April is high season with best weather but higher prices. Shoulder seasons (November, May) offer excellent conditions and better value.
Mexico offers excellent value for yacht charters. A basic 38-40ft monohull bareboat starts from around USD $2,800/week in low season up to USD $6,500/week during Christmas-New Year. Catamarans typically cost 60-80% more. Skippered charters add USD $160-200/day, whilst fully crewed luxury charters start from USD $9,500/week. Budget for extras: fuel (USD $250-450), provisioning (USD $70-100/person—food is affordable in Mexico), marina fees (USD $30-70/night), Mexican tourist fee (Derecho de No Immigrante, around USD $30/person), and fishing permits if desired (USD $25-40).
Standard yacht charters typically include: the yacht itself, standard equipment and safety gear, bed linen and towels, final cleaning, and dinghy with outboard motor. Not included are: fuel, food and beverages, marina and mooring fees, Mexican tourist taxes (Derecho de No Immigrante), skipper/crew (unless booked), fishing permits, and optional extras like fishing gear or water sports equipment. Many Mexican anchorages are free, helping keep overall costs manageable. Always check your charter contract for specific inclusions.
Mexico offers spectacular wildlife encounters, particularly in the Sea of Cortez. January-March brings grey whales, humpback whales, and blue whales. Year-round you can see dolphins, sea lions (particularly at Los Islotes near La Paz), manta rays, and whale sharks (October-April). The Sea of Cortez has incredible marine biodiversity with over 900 fish species. In the Caribbean, you’ll find sea turtles, tropical fish, and coral reefs. Bird life is abundant throughout. The combination of desert and marine ecosystems creates unique opportunities. Many charterers time trips specifically for whale watching (winter) or whale shark swimming (autumn-spring).
Yes, sailing in Mexico’s established charter areas (La Paz, Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, Riviera Maya) is very safe. These regions have well-developed tourism infrastructure, good marinas, and active sailing communities. Mexican people are welcoming and helpful. However, you should take common-sense precautions: secure your yacht properly, don’t leave valuables visible, follow local advice about where to anchor, and stay in established charter areas. Weather monitoring is important, especially regarding hurricanes in summer months. Medical facilities in tourist areas are good. The vast majority of charterers have wonderful, trouble-free experiences. Your charter company will provide detailed safety briefings and local knowledge.
